As much as vacation is about rest and relaxation, eating food I’m not used to and having one or two (or ten) margaritas can leave me feeling a bit yucky the next day. To top it off, as much as I love the beach, I’ve never been able to sit on it all day because I get a bit antsy – even with a good book in my lap. An early morning beach-vacation workout before the sun is high in the sky (and before I eat breakfast) leaves me feeling refreshed and relaxed and better able to enjoy a day on the sand.
As is the case when you’re out of town, a gym might not be available. This is actually a good thing! It’s fun to change up your routine from time to time, and finding a way to workout without the gym can be a creative endeavour. Down the beach from my hotel, while I was vacationing in Mexico, I found a great staircase and was able to create my own little Beach Vacation Workout.
Trust me when I say this workout will make you sweat! Make sure you drink lots of water, don’t get overheated, and be mindful of how you’re feeling while you’re doing it. Also watch your step and use common sense where and how you’re doing the exercises.

The Beach-Vacation Workout
Step 1) Find a staircase (preferably close to the beach so you can listen to the waves).
Step 2) Do this:
Starting at the bottom of the staircase:
- Jump Squats (or Box Jumps) x 10 reps
- Stair Climber (take steps two at a time) x 50 – 150 steps
Once you get to the top:
- Inverted Rows x 10
- Push Ups x 10
Descend the staircase (this is your rest period).
Step 3) Repeat 6-8 times.
Step 4) Feel good.
Step 5) Drink more margaritas.
Have fun, and let me know what you think of my Beach-Vacation Workout!
